چکیده

In this paper we review open queueing network models of manufacturing systems. The paper consists of two parts. In the first part we discuss design and planning problems arising in manufacturing. In doing so we focus on those problems that are best addressed by queueing network models. In the second part of the paper we describe the developments in queueing network methodology. We are primarily concerned with features such as general service times, deterministic product routings, and machine failures features that are prevalent in manufacturing settings. Since these features have eluded exact analysis, approximation procedures have been proposed. In the second part of this paper we review the developments in approximation procedures and highlight the assumptions that underlie these approaches. A significant development in the study of queueing network models is the discovery (empirical) that under conditions that are not very restrictive in practice: (i) equilibrium expected queue lengths behave as if they are convex functions of the processing rate of the server, and (ii) altering the processing rate at one station has minimal effect on the equilibrium expected queue lengths at other stations in the network. As a result researchers have been able to approximate some of the optimal design problems by convex programs. In the second part of this paper we describe these developments. Inspite of the advances made in the analysis of open queueing networks, several of the problems described in the first part of the paper cannot be analyzed without further progress in

Capacity planning in the hospital queueing network with blocking: simulation-based optimization approach

Introduction: Hospital administrators have always faced the challenge of providing the best possible health services in a resource-limited environment. The patient flow throughout the hospital is affected by lack of the capacities that can lead to bed-blocking among the hospital units. In this research, the patient flow in the hospital is modeled as an open queueing network with blocking. Then,...

Emergency Location Problems with an M/G/k Queueing System

Since late 1960's, the emergency location problems, fire stations and medical emergency services have attracted the attention of researchers. Mathematical models, both deterministic and probabilistic, have been proposed and applied to find suitable locations for such facilities in many urban and rural areas. Here, we review some models proposed for finding the location of such facilities, wit...

State-of-the-art Survey Open Queueing Networks: Optimization and Performance Evaluation Models for Discrete Manufacturing Systems *

In this survey we review methods to analyze open queueing network models for discrete manufacturing systems. We focus on design and planning models for job shops. The survey is divided in two parts: in the first we review exact and approximate decomposition methods for performance evaluation models for single and multiple product class networks. The second part reviews optimization models of th...

Multi-Objective Lead Time Control in Multistage Assembly Systems (TECHNICAL NOTE)

In this paper we develop a multi-objective model to optimally control the lead time of a multistage assembly system. The multistage assembly system is modeled as an open queueing network, whose service stations represent manufacturing or assembly operations. The arrival processes of the individual parts of the product, which should be assembled to each other in assembly stations, are assumed to...
